Baseball Week one

Biology Tutoring Eval

I just finished up this project because the spring baseball season started so I cant tutor after school anymore. I'm very happy with how this activity went. My goal was to better understand Bio, and I really think I did especially the electron transport chain which I've never fully understood and explaining to someone else really solidified in my mind. A second goal was to help other kids with the subject. I really think this went well too, one girl I tutored told me that she understood the genetics part of the course, and she did very well on the test. My third goal was to improve my dealings with people in different situations. Because tutoring presents a fairly common teacher-student dynamic which im often on the student side of I thought it would be good to get some practice as a teacher and better understand the relationship. I thought this went well, it took me a little while to get better at not coming off as condescending, but I'm sure thats something most people struggle with. I thought this activity met both my proposed outcomes, "increased awareness of my own strengths and areas for growth" and "undetaking new challenges". The first outcome was met by understanding my limitations both as a teacher and in Biology as a subject. There were things that I was really good at explaining and then other parts such as the organelles of a cell that I had a harder time with. The second outcome was met because it was a new challenge being in this kind of situation where I was the tutor and I had to adjust to the new role.

Baseball Conditioning

New CAS software

Baseball Conditioning

Conclusion Journal:
For the last couple months I'v been doing 5 hours a week of baseball conditioning to get ready for the spring. This activity ended last Thursday with the last pitching/catching clinic. My big goal for this activity was to get in shape, not only for baseball but because I perform better academically when i'm healthy. I achieved this, I feel much better and I've gotten back into a cycle of exercise that keeps me running. I feel much better and I've seen an increase in my understanding of subjects at school. Another goal for this activity was to see how the team looks, and to try to embrace my new position as a non-captain this year. I think this will be good for me, I feel I have less responsibility, and can focus more on my play. Which is not to say that I didnt want to be a captain, I may be difficult for me to take orders from some of the seniors, because I am just a little bitter that I wont be a captain this year. On the other hand, its not my decision and Ill support the captains and the team, because its really not about me. My two learning outcomes were showing perseverance in an activity, and undertaking challenges. I met the first outcome by giving up my Saturdays, and thursday nights to baseball, its a long drive and worked hard to get back into shape. The second outcome was more subtle, there were some adjustments to my swing and motion because of my growth over the off-season, but also coming to terms with my new role was a new challenge that I mentioned above.

Curling Reflection 2/6/10

Curling was my largest CAS activity so far. It involved a lot of planning on my part, not only to start the club, but to keep it going, and to get people to curling every Monday. This was the first thing I've ever really taken charge of. I surprised myself to be honest, I think I always think things will be impossible to do, but when i start them I almost always figure out a way to go through with it and to get it done. In a lot of ways I think this curling club proved to me that I could orchestrate something like this. I feel very proud that I managed to get a club, especially something as weird as curling, off the ground. The other major piece of this activity was my interactions with others. To start the club I had to put myself out there and propose this strange club to my friends and solicit a teacher I didnt even know. Sturgis is a great place for this kind of venture though, and I was well supported. I think for me the communication skills i learned are by far the most important thing I got out of this activity. Because I had to organised and find a place to curl, times to curl, people to curl, I found myself talking to lots and lots of people. Even over the course of this activity I saw myself improve in this area and i think its important that I increase my communication skills and focus on them in other activities as well because the world is based on communication and I know that being able to communicate well will serve me in my life in the future. Curling gave me chance to take charge, to exercise some leadership skills, and to improve my communication, while trying out a new sport and initiating an activity that will hopefully return next year. Im very happy with the outcome of this activity.

Basketball Filming (2/5/10)

Last boys home basketball game, against Nantucket. A close lose for Sturigs.

Basketball reflection

This activity was one that I hated to begin with. Generally I cant stand watching my peers play sports because I feel so helpless and useless. However I think this activity challenged me to follow a team of my peers and to care about how they did. My first outcome was undertaking new challenges, and I achieved that by challenging myself to step outside of myself and to think about our school as a whole, and I think this is an important part of the experience at any school. This activity benefited the basketball team because they had a tape to study and to help themselves improve with. And in addition to helping me become more a part of out school community this activity forced me to familiarize myself with camcorder technology, which I think i can use in other parts of my life. The one problem with this activity was that I had minimal human interaction. I think I want to work more interaction into my CAS activities because I feel that communication is the most important thing I've improved with my CAS so far and something I want to be better at. This activity gave me a different perspective on sports and community as well as a chance to improve some technology skills that may be useful in the future, on the whole I am very happy with this activities outcome.
