Waldorf conclusion

This is a written reflection of my volunteering at the Waldorf School of Cape Cod. I worked at the fair, an annual fundraiser for the private school, for 5 hours. This school is where I was given my first eight years of education. I grew up their. I mention in my blog that it felt good to give back to this community that had helped me so much to become who i am. In fact that was the biggest thing that i gained from this experiece. Waldorf was a second home to me, and it really made me feel better to know I was helping to help other kids have that same experience. I think more than anything this experience has made me decide to do more volunteer work that I can identify with. If something means something to me than i believe my time is better spent helping that orginization.

Special Olympics Soccer Reflection

Although this was a relitivly short activity, I believe my experience was good for me and for those I helped. I spent two sundays, from 6 to 4, volunteering my time at the special Olympics soccer tournament. I must say that i really enjoyed my time there. One of my learning outcomes was eight, to develop new skills. I met this outcome by interacting with the special needs players, previously I have had very little experience with the mentally, or pysicly retarded. I did not know what to expect and I fell that at first i was tentative, but the athletes drew me out of my shell. In my first blog I say that I met and talked to one athlete in particular, this man really connectd with me and we talked for several hours that day. This interaction developed my understanding of some mental illness, and that most are simply superficial, many are high functioning, engaging wonderful people. My second outcome is very related to the first, it is eitht, dealing with issues of global importance. mental retardation has been, and is a struggle for millions of people and their families all over the world, regardless of nationality, reliogion, or ethnicity. This experience gave me a chance to understand what so many people cope with every day, the challenges that they face and overcome. In my second blog I speak about how I felt after the last day, and I found myself imagining having some kind of mental handicap to deal with. I fell I have a better understanding of mental retardation, and the struggle that many face each day as a result of it, although i do not claim to even imagine how hard this may make life for somepeople.

Soccer Reflection

Soccer is my secondary sport, i took it up sophmore year to play a sport in the fall. However this year i was very excited for the soccer season, my goals were to improve my technical skills, get in shape after a long summer and to help make this years soccer team successful. The outcomes i experienced were that i did get into shape, I did improve my technical skills, and we were the most successful Sturgis Boys Soccer team in history. One element of my experience during this activity was the younger members of the team, and the relationships i formed with them. Looking back on the season i realize that entering the fall of 2009 i did not expect to be in anyways a leader or to feel responsible for the kids on the team because soccer is "not my sport". However in at least two of my journals I give examples of a younger player who is either down, or is having a problem, and how I felt compelled to help them. I think that this is directly linked to my learning outcome four, working with others because these underclassman were inexperienced and a little lost and I realized that even though i was pretty lost too i could help them out. My second major learning outcome for soccer was number seven, considering ethical implications. This proved to be a giant topic in my blogs. In games, such as the CCA game, and the Wareham game, tempers were often high and in several cases there were shoving matches. These situations challenged me to consider what was right, let my emotions carry me away? or control myself and act as a good sport? although i did not always control myself, as the season progressed i became calmer, as you can see from my shying from a fight in the Wareham game. This gave me a chance to concentrate on my game and let the other things go, and I believe that improved my play. Soccer was a success for me, we had the most wins ever, I made some valuable bonds with others, and I worked on controlling myself in strenuous situations.
